I just received my second Drop Liner Backpack from Truce. My first was Dacron sailcloth and I love it, so much so I wanted a second in medium blue Dyneema. The coated Dyneema fabric gives the pack more external water resistance than with the Dacron. (The water resistance of the Truce Drop Liner backpacks comes primarily from the liner, not the exterior fabric.) Dyneema makes the pack lighter than my original Dacron sailcloth bag which is remarkably light. The medium blue polyurethane film coating will prevent this pack from getting dirty as easily as my Dacron sailcloth bag does. The Dyneema bag is substantially more expensive than the Dacron and while I have not yet traveled with the new bag due to COVID-19 and all, I believe it will be worth the incremental cost.
I ordered size medium and opted for side pockets, a $20 up charge per pocket. Luke has updated the side pocket pattern since I received my first bag and the new configuration is better. When empty, the new pockets hug the side of the pack and make it appear more streamlined. Enclosing elastic within the seams of the side pockets makes the new version far less prone to catching on something. I use side pockets for quick access to a HydroFlask and sunglasses case in pockets adequately deep and elasticized to hold both items.
I took Luke's suggestion to get the Fidlock on my first bag and love it. So I popped for the extra $14 and got a Fidlock on this one, too.
The zippered pockets on the lid and on the front of the backpack (farthest surface from wearer's back) are well-constructed, very functional and water resistant. The two inside pockets located adjacent to the wearer's back are very useful and, again, well-constructed.
Included exterior compression straps can be removed when not in use and this system works well. The same holds for a waist belt that attaches via a hidden hook and loop patch on the back of the pack.
Luke makes an excellent product. Truce backpacks are expensive but the materials and workmanship justify the price. What sets Truce apart is the experience of working with Luke to get something that perfectly suits my needs. Luke is great - personable and laid back while taking his product very seriously. (Added benefit: Just in case you need to order in French or Czech instead of English, Luke can help. Seriously.) Anyone who cares about high quality, light weight, functionality, and the customer experience like I do will love his or her Dyneema Drop Liner Truce backpack. I can’t recommend Truce backpacks highly enough.
